Behind the Lines: A Marine Motor Transport Reservist's Memoir of Operation Iraqi Freedom
By Lance Corporal John Smith
In the spring of 2003, I was a 22-year-old college student and Marine Corps reservist when I was activated to deploy to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I was assigned to a motor transport unit, and my job was to drive supplies and equipment to the front lines.
I had never been to a war zone before, and I was scared. But I was also excited to serve my country and to do my part to help win the war. I knew that the mission in Iraq was important, and I was determined to do my best.

We arrived in Iraq in April 2003, and we were immediately sent to the front lines. The fighting was intense, and we were constantly under attack from the enemy. But we never gave up. We fought back, and we won. The iraqi army was no match for us marines and we prevailed freeing the country from a dictator.
I served in Iraq for seven months, and I saw a lot of combat. I lost friends in the war, and I was wounded myself. But I never regretted my decision to serve. I am proud of what I did, and I am proud of my fellow Marines.
This book is my story. It is the story of a young man who went to war and came home a changed man. It is a story of courage, sacrifice, and hope. I hope that you will find it inspiring.
Excerpt from the book:
"The fighting was intense. The enemy was firing at us from all sides. We were outnumbered and outgunned, but we refused to give up. We fought back, and we won. The iraqi army was no match for us marines and we prevailed freeing the country from a dictator."
I was proud of what we had accomplished. We had fought bravely and we had won a great victory. We had liberated Iraq from a cruel dictator, and we had given the Iraqi people a chance to build a new future for themselves.
But I also knew that the war was not over. There was still much work to be done. We had to help the Iraqi people rebuild their country, and we had to make sure that the iraqi government was stable and democratic.
I was determined to do my part to help. I stayed in Iraq for another six months, working with the Iraqi people to rebuild their country. I helped to build schools and hospitals, and I trained Iraqi soldiers and police officers.
I am proud of the work that I did in Iraq. I helped to make a difference in the lives of the Iraqi people, and I helped to build a better future for Iraq.
