In 1889, Jules Verne's novel "Around the World in Eighty Days" captivated the public's imagination. Inspired by the fictional tale, the New York World and the Cosmopolitan magazine launched a daring competition: a race around the world with a prize of $20,000 (equivalent to over $600,000 today).

Bly and Bisland eagerly accepted the challenge, determined to prove that women were just as capable as men when it came to adventure and exploration.

On November 14, 1889, Bly and Bisland set off from New York City on separate routes. Bly traveled eastward via Europe and the Suez Canal, while Bisland took the westward route across the United States and Asia.

Their journey was fraught with challenges and obstacles. Bly faced delays, robberies, and even arrests. Bisland encountered language barriers, cultural misunderstandings, and treacherous terrain. Yet, they persevered, driven by their determination and the support of their respective publications.

On January 25, 1890, Nellie Bly arrived in New York City, completing the journey in 72 days, 6 hours, and 11 minutes, breaking the fictional record set by Verne's protagonist Phileas Fogg. Elizabeth Bisland arrived three days later, in 76 days, 8 hours, and 26 minutes.

Their achievement shattered stereotypes and redefined the role of women in society. It demonstrated that women were capable of great feats of physical and intellectual endurance, inspiring countless others to pursue their dreams.

The race around the world not only made Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland famous but also had a lasting impact on journalism. Their groundbreaking reporting and vivid accounts of their travels raised awareness about different cultures and fostered international understanding.

Today, their story continues to inspire women and girls around the world to break down barriers, embrace adventure, and strive for excellence.

Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland's race around the world was a pivotal moment in history, showcasing the power of female determination and the transformative nature of adventure. Their legacy continues to inspire and empower women today, proving that with courage, resilience, and a belief in oneself, anything is possible.
